Late Night Live 26.6.2008 – PHILLIP ADAMS INTERVIEWING JOSE RAMOS HORTA & WIMAR WITOELAR

I think it was brilliant that Jose Ramos Horta & Wimar Witoelar were on the same program. And Phillip, as usual, was a wonderful interviewer.

I have been involved in East Timor solidarity for 33 years and I have known Jose for almost that period of time. It was very heartening to hear this very courageous man provide some background to the attempt on his life and give some insights into a number of the problems facing the people of Timor Leste.

I thought that Phillip handled questions about some of the awkward questions – especially to Jose – in a particularly sensitive manner.

It was good to hear the thoughts of Wimar Witoelar, a progressive and humanitarian Indonesian thinker, share his insights about some of the human rights issues in the region in such a forthright and honest way – especially his acknowledgement of the righteousness of the cause of East Timor’s independence.

I think that it would be useful for Late Night Live in the future to interview international human rights lawyers to discuss how the criminals in the ranks of the TNI might be brought to justice.

The TNI generals have committed genocide in East Timor, Acheh, Malaku (the Moluccan Islands) and other parts of Indonesia. They continue to do so in West Papua.

TL cannot be expected to undertake this task alone. It is very small compared with its populous neighbour and many nations eg Australia, the US, the UK, the Netherlands and France, tried to profit out of Indonesia’s illegaloccupation of TL. They, therefore, have a moral responsibility to do more to bring the perpetrators to justice.

I also think this is very necessary to break the stranglehold that the TNI has on Indonesia’s political landscape. It is always going to be extremely difficult for Indonesia to become truly democratic while the present TNI generals wield such great power, influence and corruption.

Anyway, Phillip & the Late Night Live team, thank you for a moving, thought provoking and inspirational program.
